We witnessed something that I can see only as a Miracle that the situation was not any worse than it already was. A major storm rolled through So Cal and and we had a front row seat for the thunderstorm of a lifetime. A neighbor's camera caught the lightning strike that caused the whole block to go dark and cause the chaos that came after
What we didn't know at the time was that a Cypress tree was hit by the lightning strike and caught on fire. While pouring down rain, embers of the tree were raining down around the area, in yards and on top of roofs.
An initial thought of attempting to put out the fire was quickly squashed when the size of the fire was noticed
The flames were seen and neighbors came out from blocks away to see what was going on and to make sure all were okay
It was warm outside and some were seen in only a shirt and shorts.
It took the Fire Department almost an hour and approximately 500 gallons of water to put the fire out.
We are all incredibly thankful how the situation came out; the house only had minor damage but could have been a lot worse with a vent to the attic right above the window. The fire could have caught other houses in the neighborhood on fire but the rain helped put out the embers that otherwise would have made the situation far worse.
